PART 2

I Found Divorce Papers Under Our Bed, Then Discovered Who Joanna Really Was

I sat on our bedroom floor for nearly twenty minutes, staring at the letter addressed to Joanna.

My husband had spent two years helping me survive blindness, and now that I was finally beginning to see again, I had discovered he might be planning to leave me.

The cruelest part was that Colton still believed I couldn’t read a single word…

PART 3

I unfolded the letter with hands that wouldn’t stop trembling.

The handwriting wasn’t Colton’s.

It was neat, careful, almost like a teacher’s handwriting, and I had to bring the page close to the window to make out the smaller lines.

Dear Joanna, it began.

I know your father promised to tell her himself.

I cannot keep waiting while she signs papers she cannot read.

I read that sentence three times.

Under the letter lay a thin folder, the same one I had glimpsed Colton sliding beneath the bed.

At the top was a draft petition for divorce.

Behind it were copies of a proposed property agreement, an authorization to speak to my insurance company, and a form titled Durable Power of Attorney.

My name appeared on each document.

So did a signature that looked remarkably like mine.
