My Husband Declined My Card When I Tried to Buy Diapers—He Had No Idea Who Held His Company’s Debt PART 1
My credit card was declined while I was trying to buy diapers for my baby, so I called my husband for help.
He coldly told me that it was not his problem and that I needed to figure it out myself, while my mother in law chimed in over the speaker to call me a useless leech.
I did not argue with either of them in the grocery aisle.
Instead, I calmly dialed my private banker and told him to release the funds, completely unaware of how quickly that single order would turn their lives upside down.
“I am so sorry, ma’am, but the chip reader declined the card a second time,” the cashier said in a gentle voice.
I stood completely still by the register at the Meijer supermarket in Grand Rapids, Michigan, staring down at the items resting on the black conveyor belt.
There was an expensive tub of hypoallergenic formula, four glass jars of sweet potato puree, and two boxes of size three diapers for my eight month old daughter, Hazel, who was babbling happily from the metal cart.
The digital screen showed a balance of $114.62.
My heart pounded against my ribs as I reached into my coat pocket and dialed my husband, Brandon Faulkner.
When he picked up, his tone was completely flat, sounding so relaxed that I briefly thought our bank had simply experienced a technical glitch.
“I locked the shared cards this morning, Paige,” Brandon said before I could explain the grocery register.
“Your spending habits have gotten out of hand, and this nonsense ends right now.”
I stared at the baby formula sitting on the belt while other shoppers began shifting behind me.
“Brandon, I am buying basic baby food and diapers for your infant daughter,” I whispered into the receiver.
“Then walk away from the register and solve it on your own,” Brandon replied with a sharp scoff.
“Maybe leaving empty handed will finally teach you the actual value of a hard earned dollar.”
Before I could answer, I heard rustling on the line as someone snatched the phone out of his grasp.
My mother in law, Brenda, shouted directly into the microphone with a venom that made my stomach twist.
