Allison Brandt — The Blue Folder They Never Expected
His sister didn’t move.
“We already talked last night. You told me to stay out of it, remember?”
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I know more than I wish I did.”
PART 3
Kyle reached for the drive. Kendall closed her fist and stepped behind me.
“Don’t,” she said. I had never heard her speak to her brother that way.
For years Kendall had seemed content to echo Sandra’s judgments, arriving every Sunday with another complaint about my housekeeping.
She had criticized the nursery paint, my decision to breastfeed, and even the way I pronounced Miles’s middle name.
Now she stood on our doorstep shaking as though the house were on fire.
“Kendall,” I said, “what did you copy?”
She glanced at the baby. “The recording from the office. And the financial files. Mom made me help prepare the paperwork yesterday. When I realized what it meant, I couldn’t sleep.”
Kyle laughed, but he was looking at her hand rather than her face.
“She’s being dramatic. She misunderstood a conversation about the family business.”
“Then you won’t mind if Allison hears it,” Kendall answered.
