Over the following months I took my own executive schedule apart and rebuilt it around two five-year-olds.
I walked them to preschool.
I learned that Micah hated crushed tomatoes, that Toby couldn’t sleep with the closet door cracked, that both of them were savagely competitive over board games.
The first time Toby called me Dad, it was an accident.
We were building a plastic model airplane at the kitchen table, and a small wheel dropped onto the rug, and without looking up he said, “Dad, can you pass me that wheel?” All three of us went still.
Toby turned scarlet, hearing what he’d said.
