The Tooth That Changed Everything

The tooth had been sitting in a museum in Liverpool for most of a century.

It came from a man who had died somewhere between 2855 and 2570 BCE, in the period that straddles the Early Dynastic age and the beginning of Egypt’s Old Kingdom — the era when the first true pyramids were under construction, when the pharaonic state was finding its monumental form, when the civilization we call ancient Egypt was still young but already spectacular.

The man had been buried at Nuwayrat, a village site about 265 kilometers south of modern Cairo, in a manner typical of his time and place: his body placed inside a large ceramic vessel, a jar burial, in a tomb cut into the face of a hillside.

He was not royalty.

He was not a high official.

He was, by all available evidence, an ordinary person — a man living an ordinary life in the shadow of an extraordinary civilization.

His remains were excavated in the early twentieth century, during the period of British archaeological activity in Egypt, and eventually donated by the Egyptian Antiquities Service to the excavation committee organized by the archaeologist John Garstang.

From Garstang’s collection they passed to the Liverpool Institute of Archaeology, and eventually to World Museum Liverpool, where they were catalogued, stored, and waited for science to develop the tools to read what they contained.

In July 2025, those tools arrived.

A team of researchers led by Adeline Morez Jacobs, a visiting research fellow at the Francis Crick Institute in London and Liverpool John Moores University, succeeded in extracting DNA from the root of that tooth and sequencing it into the first complete genome ever recovered from an ancient Egyptian of this period.

The paper was published in the journal Nature, one of science’s most prestigious venues, and it immediately changed the conversation about one of history’s most studied civilizations.

The genome had been waiting for over four thousand years.

The science that could finally read it had been developing for barely four decades.

What it revealed was not what many expected — and yet, in the hands of careful scientists, it made immediate sense in the context of what historians and archaeologists had been suggesting for years.

Approximately 80 percent of the man’s ancestry traced back to ancient North African populations.

That much, while remarkable to confirm at the genomic level, fit with expectations.

But the remaining 20 percent of his ancestry told a different, more surprising story.
