“Told me what, Rosalind?”

For several seconds I could not manage anything else.

I just stood there, looking at the two children, while the noise of the terminal roared and faded around me like surf.

The older of the two boys opened his eyes then and looked up at me directly, and the expression on his small face was so familiar — so exactly the expression I knew from old photographs of myself at that age — that my chest physically ached with it.
