“I have an objection.” Jonathan froze beside me, his fingers stiffening against my palm and then dropping it entirely, and he began to rotate the signet ring, his knuckles white under the altar lights.

Two men in dark suits stepped in behind Karina and stood flanking the doors, their eyes on Jonathan.

“Rowena is unwell,” Jonathan said toward the middle pews, his voice low and commanding.

“Please, everyone remain seated while we handle this private family matter.” She is not unwell, Jonathan, I said, my voice carrying clearly across the altar steps.

And this is not a private matter.
