“He was likely referring to the company’s financial records,” Detective Miller noted.

Martha looked out the window.

“Christopher always tried to see the good in people until they proved beyond a doubt that they were dishonest.”

“And what about his wife?” Detective Miller asked.

Martha thought back to family dinners where Valerie constantly interrupted Christopher, corrected his stories, and treated his financial success as her personal funding source.

“I believed she at least cared about the comfortable life they built together.”

“That is not quite the same as loving him,” the detective observed quietly.
