Mariana took her phone out of her scrub pocket to check for missed messages from her mother.

Her thumb tapped the screen and opened her recent call history.

There were two missed calls from the head manager’s desk at Teresa’s commercial bank on Camelback Road, both marked as blocked.

“Has she tried calling you since eleven o’clock?” Officer Henderson asked, looking down at the screen.

“No,” Mariana said.

As she held the phone, three unread texts from Teresa’s cell flashed across the screen in quick succession.

The first said Teresa’s lunch reservation at the garden bistro on 16th Street had been pushed back to one thirty.
