I sat at the corner of the table with my new dark blue passbook open beside a lined ledger page.

The first line showed a sixty-dollar cash deposit from my sweet corn sales on Tuesday afternoon.

The second line showed one hundred and fifty dollars from my bookkeeping work for the grain elevator, deposited Wednesday morning.

The third line showed two hundred and twenty dollars from the farm supply ledger review I finished Thursday night.

“Total balance is four hundred and thirty dollars,” I said out loud.

Grace set a pot of boiled potatoes on the trivet and leaned over my shoulder to look at the numbers.
