Sloan walked out of the side office, her black notebook tucked under her arm.

She stopped two feet away from me, her eyes tracking the movement of a clerk carrying a box of files down the corridor.

“The attorney is in the side room with your father now,” Sloan said.

“Has my mother arrived?” I asked.

“She is down in the lobby,” Sloan said.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small plastic bag containing a black cell phone.

“We recovered Elise Porter’s body three hours ago.”
