Chosen Every Single Day
I met Eleanor again at a secure location. She looked exhausted, stripped of all the composure that used to define her.
“You will never speak to me as your husband again,” I told her. “If there’s any place for you in my life, it’s only as my biological mother. And I’m not sure I can accept even that yet.”
She nodded through tears and took my terms without argument. From then on, we worked through lawyers to keep Richard from reaching me.
When two men came out to the ranch asking questions, my father stood in the yard and made it clear they’d be going through him first.
That was the moment I understood who had been protecting me all along.
A year later, outside a courthouse in Nashville, the annulment was finalized. The four of us stood together on the steps, and Eleanor thanked my mother for raising me.
