PART 1 — THE TOAST

My husband raised his glass in front of his entire family and announced in German that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant with his child.

He did it because he believed I could not understand a single word.

I was standing less than ten feet away, serving the cake I had brought for Sunday dinner.

No one lowered their voice.

No one tried to hide it.

His sister, Elisa, giggled.

His father stared down at his plate.

And his mother, Ingrid, waited until I returned to the table before smiling at Lukas and saying in German:

“Don’t worry.

In the end, we’ll get Evelyn to raise that baby.”

They laughed.

I placed the cake knife beside the serving plate.

“Does anyone want coffee?”

Lukas looked at me with the same condescending smile I had once mistaken for tenderness.

Then, still speaking German, he said:

“See?

She doesn’t suspect a thing.”

What Lukas did not know was that I had spent nearly two years learning his language.
