He eventually found work restoring old houses — taking broken, neglected things and making them whole, which those who loved him understood was not a coincidence but a kind of penance and a kind of prayer, a man who had shattered his own life learning, board by board and room by room, that broken things could be rebuilt if you were patient enough and honest enough to do the work.
He started therapy, and kept at it.
