The house’s doorbell-camera footage showed the SUV leaving shortly after five in the morning. Mia had been alone nearly fourteen hours before Grandma arrived.

The counselor looked straight at me. “Do you want your name withheld from your parents during the initial contact?”

“No.” Andrew looked toward me. I kept my eyes on the counselor. “They should know I filed it.”

We returned to the house after dark. I packed Mia’s clothes, collected her eleven crayons, photographed the kitchen, and saved the footage from the doorbell system before anyone could remotely erase it.

My grandmother kissed Mia on the forehead. “You’re safe now.”

Mia leaned into her. “Will you come if I call again?”
