“Did Grandma Evelyn see them too?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” She fell asleep with one hand wrapped around my wrist.

Chapter 9 — The House That Was Never Theirs, on Paper

The child-safety report was not the only thing quietly moving forward the next morning. My grandmother owned the house where my parents lived. That fact had become almost invisible over the years.

Grandma and her husband bought the property in 1971. After he died, she moved into a smaller home closer to downtown and let my mother and father live in the larger house while raising us.

No sale ever happened. No deed changed hands. My parents covered utilities and basic maintenance, but the recorded owner was still Evelyn Harper. Over the years my mother started calling it “our house.”
