Amber had either misunderstood something Garnet told her, or Garnet had told her a thing that was not true, and either way I now knew that my son had been making promises to his wife about my property — promises he had no standing to make, about assets he did not own.

That alone was troubling.

But it was the next sentence out of her mouth that turned the whole night from a family matter into something colder.

Chapter 8 — The Confidential Clue

“And Garnet’s company,” Amber announced, “will be expanding into the entire Westbridge building.”

I kept my face still, but something in me went very quiet and very alert.

Because the Westbridge building was not public knowledge.
