I had spent his whole life trying not to be that kind of father to him.
He had spent the last year making it necessary.
And I understood, hanging up the phone, that the man who had done that was not entirely Garnet’s fault and not entirely mine, but that the protecting of his mother could no longer wait for me to finish grieving the son I thought I’d raised.

Twenty minutes later my phone buzzed with an email from Michelle: the access logs from my home office.
Garnet’s personal entry code had opened my study three nights earlier, while Hazel and I were out at dinner.
