I looked again at the drawing under the blue magnet.

There were no instruction lists pinned to that refrigerator.

No criticisms.

No impossible demands.

There was a child’s drawing, and a little blue whale, and the sound of my son laughing in a home whose door only opened for the two of us.

For eight years I had believed that holding a family together meant covering every crack in it with my own savings, my own time, my own silent endurance.

I understand now a far simpler and far truer thing: that a family can never be held together by one person carrying the whole weight of it alone.
