Richard had said, again and again, that she only wanted attention.

And the terrible thing, the thing I have had to make my peace with, is that in a way he was right.

My mother did want attention.

She wanted, after a lifetime of never complaining, of watering her plants with a fever, of saying it’s nothing while her body screamed — she wanted, at the very end of all that silence, one single thing.

She wanted someone to finally look.

And when we finally did look — when a doctor locked a door and a daughter powered off a phone and a whole neighborhood stood on a porch and refused to move and refused to move — we did not find a disease inside my mother.

We found evidence.

We found justice.

And we found the voice of a woman who, with a tired and aching and failing body, refused, absolutely refused, to let her daughter stay buried under a dark secret one single day longer.
