She is now, she tells me, the person in that building who insists that wellbeing notes go in writing and that the person who receives them replies in writing.

It is a small thing.

She says so herself, in the last line of that letter, in a way that made me sit down.

It is a very small thing and it is all I have got and I am going to do it for the rest of my career.

 

Part Twenty-Five: The First Weeks

An emergency order was entered on the Thursday, the day after the funeral home, giving me temporary sole conservatorship, and it took about eleven minutes in a courtroom with nobody opposing it because everybody who might have opposed it was in custody.

It was made permanent in the following March.
