Forty-One Thousand Dollars and a Yellow Paper Envelope
I tore the top edge of the yellow paper envelope.
The ripping sound was loud over the falling rain.
I tipped the ragged opening toward my palm.
A silver metal key slid out and dropped into my hand.
It wasn’t a normal house key or car key.
The metal was thick and rectangular, with a small round hole drilled through the top corner.
It looked like something from an industrial padlock or a secure bank lockbox.
I rubbed my thumb over the flat surface.
