Going Home to the Ocean
Captain Hartline stepped closer and put a warm hand on my shoulder.
“For three years my son has talked about the sergeant who didn’t give up on him — the man who lost his own leg making sure my boy got to come home and raise his daughter.
My family prays for you every night, Sergeant.
And today, by some grace I can’t explain, you walked onto my plane.”
I did not know what to do with that, and I still don’t entirely.
For three years I had carried the day of that convoy as a wound — as the afternoon I lost my leg, lost two men I could not reach, earned a medal I could not look at.
