Grandma Went Away
Not one voicemail asked about Lily. Every message concerned money. A boutique had rejected my mother’s card. Kendra’s software subscription had failed.
A car payment connected to the business line had been declined. A hotel deposit for a family vacation had been canceled. Their panic revealed how their lives had truly been built.
From the outside, they appeared independent. Underneath it all, Uncle Richard’s signature held everything together.
Headlights swept across my living-room wall. One car sped into the driveway. Then a second. Doors slammed. Footsteps hurried across the path. Someone began pounding on the front door.
“Amelia!” My mother’s voice carried through the wood. “Open this right now.”
I checked Lily’s monitor. She stirred but stayed asleep. I walked into the entryway and switched on the porch light. The pounding did not stop. I opened the main door but left the storm door locked between us.
