Brenda and Kendra stood beneath the porch light. My mother still wore the blouse she’d had on at the mall. Kendra had thrown a coat over her pajamas. Both clutched their phones as though they were presenting evidence.

“What did you say to Richard?” Brenda demanded.

“The truth.”

“You made him cancel my cards.”

“I did not control his decision.”

Kendra stepped closer. “My business account is frozen.”
