The camera showed Hailey crouching peacefully near the garden marigolds until Brenda pushed through the sliding screen door carrying the heavy green hose.

The silent lens did not capture whatever dispute occurred inside the living room earlier, but it unmistakably documented what followed

Brenda stood near the edge of the patio and directed a stream of water toward Hailey. My daughter raised her hands and backed away.

She had nowhere safe to move: the flowerbed lay to one side, the raised stone step to the other. Brenda moved forward instead of turning the water off.

I stopped the video before the fall.

Not because I didn’t want to know. I was afraid of what I might do if I watched it alone. I walked back into the treatment room. Hailey was asleep against Rachel’s shoulder, her new bandage dry, the blanket tucked beneath her chin. Rachel looked at my face and held out her free hand. “What is it?”

“Warren has video.” She was quiet for a moment.

“Does it show what Hailey said?”
“Yes.”

Rachel closed her eyes. Then she said the one thing I needed to hear.
