Chapter 9 — The Code Didn’t Work

That Friday evening, Luca’s friend Marcus arrived at the Redwood Crest estate with eight other men in three SUVs, coolers and speakers and weekend bags, ready for two days of the good life in a rich man’s mansion.

Marcus walked up to the grand front entrance, punched in the code Luca had given him, and pulled the handle.

The door did not open.

Instead, a security alarm the volume of a jet engine tore through the quiet neighborhood evening.
