In my experience the truth mostly waits, patient and silent, in the gap behind the desk, for you to drop something and go looking in the right dark corner by accident.

It was a dark cedar box, wedged into the narrow gap between the back of his heavy oak desk and the plaster wall, tucked so far down and so far back that I only saw it because I had dropped a dust cloth and gone to my knees to retrieve it.

It was sealed with a small brass padlock.

And there was a spare key sitting in plain sight in the top desk drawer, because Grayson had never once imagined I would have reason to go looking.

I turned the key.
