The anger never came.

What came instead, sitting at that table, was the deepest gratitude I have ever felt, and underneath it a grief so large I could barely hold it — grief that I had understood all of this only now, only hours too late to turn to him and say the one thing I most needed him to hear.

“No,” I whispered, tears blurring my sight as I reached across the table and took my mother’s hands for the first time in twenty-four years.

“I love him.

And he gave me everything.”
