Her Place Will Never Be Beneath Anyone
They were not, Marisela had long ago decided, cruel in the deep way their mother was cruel; they were something more ordinary and almost more disappointing, which was weak.
They had followed Sabetha because following Sabetha was easy and safe and cost them nothing, and they had never once stopped to ask whether the woman they were mocking might not deserve it.
But there is a limit even to that kind of borrowed cruelty, a place where the follower’s own conscience finally catches up — and hearing their brother’s voice come out of Ophelia’s phone, hearing him confess in his own words that this whole campaign had been built on his shame and his mother’s pride, the two of them had reached it.
You could watch it happen on their faces.
The story they had been comfortably telling themselves — that Marisela was difficult, that the family was merely defending itself, that they were the reasonable ones — could not survive contact with the evidence on that table.
And to their small credit, when it collapsed, they did not rush to rebuild it.
