There was one more thing to check, and it was the thing that turned an airtight financial case into an unanswerable one.

I pulled up the logs of our home security system.

And I found, as I had begun to suspect I would, that the kitchen camera had been manually disabled — weeks earlier, by Wendy, who had clearly decided that whatever she was doing in that kitchen should not be recorded.

But Wendy did not understand the system she had tampered with, because she had never been the one to install or administer it.

She had switched off the camera’s local feed.
