Chapter 21 — My Mother’s Ledgers

After Malcolm left, I went down one floor to the archives, where the firm’s older records were kept, and I pulled out my mother’s original ledgers from twenty-seven years ago.

They were bound in dark blue cloth, soft at the corners from handling, and they were filled with her neat, slanting hand — every entry made by hand, in the years before any of it was a screen.

I sat on the floor of the archive with them open across my lap, the way I had sat on the floor of the resort bedroom a lifetime and a marriage ago, and I read her careful figures, and I felt her near me in a way I had not for a long time.
