In Time
We had been trying to reach each other with words for weeks, over dinners, across tables, and the words were hard and slow and kept catching on all the old hurt.
And then a song did in eight bars what the words could not, because the song went underneath the words, underneath the whole cold history, down to the two young bodies that had learned each other on a dance floor in 1983 and never actually forgotten, only been told for twenty-five years that there was no time.
There was time now.
That was the whole discovery of the kitchen.
