Was it seasonal, tied to agricultural or natural calendars that we cannot reconstruct?

Was it associated with specific life events — birth, death, the passage to adulthood — in the community?

Was construction a continuous activity or concentrated in specific intense periods of effort?

We cannot know whether the animal imagery encoded specific mythological narratives analogous to written mythology in later cultures, or whether the images were primarily decorative and symbolic in a more general sense, or whether the relationship between specific images and specific meanings was more variable and less fixed than a narrative framework would suggest.

These are not failures of archaeology or of researchers.
