Just One Hour
Chapter 6 — That’s the Woman
The next morning we woke to rain tapping gently against the window. As I finished feeding Ava her bottle, someone hammered on the front door — three heavy knocks that shook the house.
My heart jumped. Holding Ava against my shoulder, I opened it.
Sabrina stood on the porch. She looked completely worn out. Dark circles framed her eyes, and a fading bruise marked one side of her face. Two uniformed police officers stood beside her.
Relief swept over me. “You’re alive.”
Tears gathered in Sabrina’s eyes as she looked at Ava. Then she turned toward me. Slowly, she raised one trembling hand and pointed directly at my chest.
“That’s the woman.”
