I have come to think of it as the last doorway.

On one side of it I was still a woman with an ordinary marriage and an ordinary set of worries, a woman who had come to bring her overworked husband a nice lunch.

On the other side I would be something else entirely, and I could feel myself standing in that doorway, not yet through it, the old life still warm behind me and the new one waiting in David’s mouth.

I wanted to stay in the doorway forever.
