Love, Logged as Debt
I handed him the copy of the black ledger.
My mother recognized the handwriting instantly — I watched it hit her.
My father flipped through it and produced a thin, forced laugh.
“This was just an internal household ledger.”
The look on my mother’s face in that moment was the one I keep returning to, because it told me something the ledger alone could not.
My father’s reaction was denial — the reflexive laugh, the minimizing, just an internal ledger, the practiced move of a man who has talked his way out of worse.
But my mother did not deny anything.
She went still, and her hand came up slightly toward the book, and her face did something complicated and awful: she recognized it.
Not just the handwriting.
The whole thing. She had known about the ledger.
