A restless movement passed through the room. His parents sat stiffly near the aisle. Dad rose beside Mom. “This is not appropriate,” he said.
“No,” I answered. “Planning to use a marriage to obtain financial guarantees was not appropriate.”
The color drained from Mom’s face. Sydney glanced toward the nearest exit.
“Last night,” I continued, “I went into my sister’s home to deliver a gift. I overheard a conversation involving Jason, Sydney, and my parents.” By then the guests were completely silent.
I did not play the whole recording. Only twenty-eight seconds — long enough for Jason to ask whether Terrence believed the baby was his, long enough for Sydney to confirm that he did, long enough for Dad to say I would sign business documents because I desperately wanted their approval.
Then I stopped the audio.
