His death at the hands of Indian Police — men who were themselves Lakota, employed by the agency to carry out the government’s orders — was a wound to the entire Hunkpapa community.

Two weeks later came Wounded Knee.

The massacre at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890 — in which soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry, Custer’s old regiment, killed approximately 250 to 300 Miniconjou Lakota men, women, and children — ended the Ghost Dance movement and ended armed resistance on the Lakota reservations.

Among the dead was Big Foot — Spotted Elk — the Miniconjou chief who had been leading his people toward the Pine Ridge reservation, hoping to find safety under Red Cloud’s protection.

Moving Robe Woman lived through Sitting Bull’s death and Wounded Knee.
