General George Crook led a column from the south.

General John Gibbon led a column from the west.

And Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer commanded the Seventh Cavalry as part of Terry’s eastern column.

Crook had already engaged with the Lakota at the Rosebud on June 17 and had retreated, effectively removing his column from the converging operation without Terry knowing.

This left the plan severely undermanned at exactly the wrong moment.

Custer’s assignment was to locate the large Lakota camp — which scouts had identified — and coordinate with Terry and Gibbon before attacking.
