Moving Robe Woman (Tȟašína Máni) — The Hunkpapa Lakota Woman Who Rode Into The Battle Of Little Bighorn After Learning Her Brother Had Been Killed
THE LONG ROAD TO RECOGNITION
Moving Robe Woman’s story has taken a long time to reach the level of recognition it deserves — and even now, that recognition is incomplete compared to the attention devoted to the soldiers who died at Little Bighorn.
The Custer Battlefield National Monument, established in the late nineteenth century, was designed to commemorate the soldiers who died there.
The narrative it embedded in stone and bronze was the narrative of American military sacrifice.
The marble markers placed at the spots where soldiers fell — gleaming white against the brown Montana grass — were physical assertions of the primacy of the soldiers’ story.
