My Daughter Dropped a Glass—Then I Learned the “Second Bottle” Was Already on Its Way Before It Ever Broke
PART 1 — “SHE NEEDS TO LEARN”
The glass slipped from Lucy’s fingers and struck the kitchen tile hard enough to break into three large pieces and a scatter of smaller ones.
Daniel’s chair scraped backward before Lucy had taken a single step.
“Stay right there.”
Lucy froze.
Her empty hand remained stretched in front of her, as though the glass might somehow return to it if she waited long enough.
“I was taking it to the table,” she whispered.
“I saw what you were doing.”
Daniel straightened the salt shaker beside his plate.
Then the pepper shaker.
He moved both until their bottoms lined up exactly with the edge of the placemat.
I reached for the broom.
“Let me get that.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Lucy.
“She needs to learn.”
Lucy began twisting the corner of her shirt between two fingers.
“It was an accident.”
“I did not say it wasn’t.”
