Every ingredient of a terrible thing was present in that rented room, and for one long night it would have been so easy to reach for them.

I understand, better than most men ever will, the pull of it — the clean, simple, total appeal of just ending the people who hurt your child.

And I want to say, to anyone who has ever felt that pull toward the people who hurt what they love: the strength is not in giving in to it.

The man I used to be could kill; that was never the hard thing, and it was never anything to be proud of.

The hard thing — the actual strength, the thing worth teaching a daughter — is to hold all of that capacity in your hands, fully awake, and to choose, deliberately, to set it down, and to do the harder, slower, better thing instead.
