My rage was mine.

It was earned, and it was righteous, and it belonged entirely to me.

It did not belong to my children, and I understood, even in the depths of it, that one of the most damaging things a betrayed parent can do is to hand their own rage to their kids to carry, to make the children choose sides in a war that is not theirs.

I was not going to do that.
