There was nothing to charge at.

There was only a cold that could not be fought and a door that would not open and a body that wanted, more and more with every passing minute, to simply lie down and be still.

What I did was not brave in that active sense.

It was something more stubborn, more animal and, I think, more available to ordinary people than courage is.

It was refusal.
