We are taught to picture cruelty as hot — a loss of control, a red face, a raised hand in a moment of fury.

And that kind exists.

But it is not, in my experience, the kind that takes everything from you.

The kind that takes everything from you is cold.

It is planned.

It is carried out by people who are entirely calm, who have thought it through in advance, who feel no anger toward you at all because you have stopped, in their minds, being a person to be angry at and become instead an obstacle to be moved.
