But the deeper freedom, the one that actually holds, is not about the circumstances at all.
It is about who you are inside them.
The potato patch on my parents’ land did not transform between October and November.
It was the same dark soil, the same lumpy potatoes, the same physical labor of bending and digging in the dirt.
What changed was that in October I would have dug those potatoes as a punishment, assigned to me by people who despised me, in a marriage that had taught me my labor belonged to whoever demanded it — and in November I dug them freely, on my own land, beside my own laughing children, because I wanted to, for no one’s reasons but my own.
