It was not sarcasm, exactly.
It was the last automatic courtesy of a lifetime of courtesies, offered on my way out the door of a home I would never sleep in again.
My mother let out a dry, condescending laugh.
“Don’t act high and mighty with me, Laura,” she said.
“When you realize how much it actually costs to survive out there on your own, you’ll come crawling back here begging for forgiveness.” And I walked out the door.
