It felt like waking up.

I want to dwell on that distinction, because it governed everything I did in the months that followed, and because it is the thing people most misunderstand about this story when I tell it.

From the outside, what I did can look like revenge: the cancelled payments, the reclaimed apartment, the family’s collapse.

But it did not feel like revenge from the inside, not for a single moment, and the difference is not just semantic.

Revenge is an action you take against someone, motivated by the desire to hurt them, and measured by their suffering.
