Chapter 17 — The Illusion

I did not witness what happened between Solomon and Jennifer after that, but I heard about it, in pieces, over the following months, and I include it here only because it completes the picture of what my husband had thrown his family away for.

He regained possession of the one thing that was genuinely his — a small one-bedroom condominium downtown that he’d owned before our marriage, occupied by tenants, which cost him a painful penalty to reclaim early.

He furnished it with a cheap sofa and his television, and cleared two drawers in the narrow closet, and invited Jennifer to move in and begin the life the two of them had spent eighteen months describing to each other in the dark.
